FAQ
Frequently asked questions about TrayBridge.
Answers to common questions about setup, operation, security and troubleshooting.
Which NAS models are supported?
TrayBridge v4.0 supports the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra. Other NAS models are not officially supported at this time.
Which operating system is TrayBridge designed for?
TrayBridge v4.0 is distributed as a Windows x64 application.
Does TrayBridge require administrator rights?
TrayBridge is installed for the current Windows user. Depending on the Windows configuration or required system components, Windows may still display a confirmation during installation.
Why does TrayBridge need SSH?
SSH is used for NAS administration, status, disk and diagnostics functions as well as for setup and recovery of access.
Are passwords stored?
Passwords are used only for the active SSH or administration workflow and are not stored persistently. Private SSH key contents are not stored in the TrayBridge configuration.
What does the host key prompt mean?
On first SSH contact, TrayBridge shows the NAS host-key fingerprint. This lets you verify that you are trusting the expected device before a password-based setup step continues.
What happens if the host key changes?
TrayBridge does not accept a changed host key automatically. It shows the previously trusted and the new SHA256 fingerprint. If you reject the change, the previous trusted value remains. The new value is stored only after you explicitly confirm it.
What is the difference between HDD standby and NAS sleep mode?
With HDD standby, both hard drives enter standby while the NAS remains active and reachable on the network. NAS sleep mode puts the whole NAS into a controlled sleep state and it must be woken before normal access resumes.
Does TrayBridge wake the hard drives unnecessarily?
The LogViewer itself does not generate NAS, SSH or HDD queries. The one-time automatic diagnostics-history refresh at application startup is also skipped if the NAS is already asleep, offline or shutting down. TrayBridge does perform normal disk monitoring, and real data access to the NAS can wake the drives independently of TrayBridge.
Why is Plex sometimes “Unknown”?
If the NAS or SSH state prevents TrayBridge from determining Plex reliably, the application intentionally shows Unknown. This indicates that the state cannot be determined reliably and does not automatically mean that Plex is broken.
Why does TrayBridge remain in the tray after I close the window?
If Hide when closed is enabled, the window close button only hides the main window. TrayBridge keeps running so tray functions, status and background monitoring remain available.
How do I exit TrayBridge completely?
Use Exit from the tray menu. If Hide when closed is disabled, closing the main window can also request a full exit. If exit confirmation is enabled, TrayBridge asks before closing completely.
How does Start with Windows work?
Enable Settings → General → Start with Windows. TrayBridge creates a per-user Windows startup entry. On Windows startup, TrayBridge starts hidden in the system tray and does not automatically display the main window.
Where are settings and logs stored?
TrayBridge user data is stored under: %APPDATA%\TrayBridge Important files include config.json, TrayBridge.log, TrayBridge_DiskHistory.log, traybridge_standby_analysis.json and traybridge_disk_history.json.
What remains after uninstallation?
By default, %APPDATA%\TrayBridge is kept. The uninstaller provides a separate data-deletion option, which is not selected by default.
Are external SSH keys deleted during uninstallation?
The documented data-deletion path removes only %APPDATA%\TrayBridge. An SSH key file stored outside that directory and only referenced by TrayBridge is therefore outside this deletion scope.
What can the application log contain?
The application log contains technical operating and error messages. Log entries can include technical metadata such as host, MAC, key path or host-key fingerprint values. Review log files before sharing them for support purposes.
Are logs automatically uploaded to a server?
No. The App Log and HDD Log are processed locally under %APPDATA%\TrayBridge and are not automatically uploaded to a server by TrayBridge.
Where do I get updates?
Current TrayBridge versions are available from the official TrayBridge download page. The download links to the corresponding GitHub Release. Updates are currently installed manually by installing the newer version.
Does TrayBridge need Internet access?
Normal NAS, SSH, Plex and diagnostics functions operate on the local network. Internet access is needed to download TrayBridge and updates; during installation, Windows may also need to download required system components.
Does Plex have to be installed?
TrayBridge can manage Plex Media Server on the supported NAS when Plex is present and its state can be determined through the configured NAS/SSH connection. Without a usable Plex service, the Plex management functions are not applicable.
What does “Offline” mean for the NAS?
Offline means that the NAS is unexpectedly unreachable or is not recognized as intentionally sleeping. A confirmed, intentionally entered sleep state is shown as Asleep instead.
What should I do if SSH is not working?
Open SSH and start Check / recover SSH. This is the primary recovery path. If required, Set up SSH key, Repair SSH key, Enable SSH and Disable SSH are also available.
What should I do after an HDD standby timeout?
TrayBridge only reports HDD standby as successful when both drives have confirmed standby. After a timeout or partial state, check for ongoing NAS activity and review diagnostics or the HDD log. Data access can keep the disks active or wake them again.
What is the difference between Diagnostics, RAW data and LogViewer?
Diagnostics provides structured state, history and analysis. RAW data belongs to a specific analysis and is loaded only on demand. LogViewer displays continuous local application and HDD logs in a separate tool window.
Is my diagnostics selection restored after a restart?
Not completely. Persistent user preferences are stored, but temporary work context is not. After a full restart, RAW state, technical accordions, individual diagnostics events and the LogViewer pause state are not restored persistently.
